Students at Sir George Monoux Sixth Form College are celebrating their A-level successes with some teachers questioning if students spent more time revising than sleeping during the exam period.

The college in Chingford Road, Walthamstow offers over 100 subjects to its 2,000 students and this year achieved an overall pass rate of 96 per cent.

Hamid Majeed received an A* in Maths, an A in Economics, an A in Politics, a B in Classical Civilisation and a B in English Literature and is now looking forward to studying PPE at London School of Economics.

“I am really excited and have been looking at all the modules already. I got exactly what I thought I would, I only hesitated on buying the text books because I didn’t want to jinx it.

"Now I want to go into International Development and maybe do a masters at an Ivy League school in America. The focus on military funding instead of foreign aid is definitely not working.

"My maths teacher was a huge inspiration to me, he really pushed me."

His teacher Narinder Singh returned the compliment claiming Hamid was a privilege to teach.

He said: “I didn’t think it was possible to do an AS and an A2 in the same year but he did it in Maths. I mean how much sleep did he get?

“I was just a guide. He is already invited back to the school to inspire others in our workshops next year.”

She said: “I was helping the elderly, just talking to them, getting the teas and their papers.

"All the staff were so lovely to me even though it was always really busy.

"They always helped me if I made a mistake. Now I want to be a doctor but will have to find a different route to become one."

Ursa Hassan got a B in Maths, a C in Biology and a C in Chemistry and is set to study Business management and Accounting at the University of Westminster.

“I am delighted, I thought I would have to go through clearing so I confirmed my results with three separate teachers because I wasn’t sure.

“I had work experience at KPMG in Canary Wharf and loved it. If I ever got a job there it would be an honour they were so nice.”

He said: "Today's spectacular exam results holds proof that our students are working harder than ever in their relentless pursuit of their dream university places, jobs and careers.

“Students have shown incredible determination, working hard with their studies, benefitting from our highly-skilled dedicated and supportive teachers, excellent learning facilities and resources. "
