A mother has launched a crowd fund appeal to help her blind son learn how to read and write.

Unbeknown to his family, Reece Williams was born blind.

At nine months old, he was diagnosed with optic-nerve hypoplasia and septo-optic dysplasia, both conditions arise from the underdevelopment of the optic nerve.

In Reece's case, he is registered as severely sight impaired but can perceive light.

He relies on a standard brailler to write and started pre-braille skills at just two years old, so that he could build up the strength in his fingers to press down the keys.

He went on to win the first Lorraine Beasant Braille Award for improvement in his skills.

His mother Tasha Reynolds, 28, of Lamorna Close, Walthamstow, who is a full-time carer for Reece, wants to buy him a smart brailler so that he can communicate with his family and hear his own mistakes.

The LCD screen and audio function means the Joseph Clarke School pupil will no longer have to feel where he went wrong, and Ms Reynolds can help her son with his homework for the first-time ever.

She said: "He needs to learn to read and write.

"Braille is so hard to learn and he did struggle with it at first but he's come so far and I want his progress to continue.

"He will need these basic skills more than anyone else later in life.

"I need to make it as a easy as possible for him and by having a smart brailler, I can learn alongside him.

"At the moment I can't help - all I see is dots.

"Reece will feel the great satisfaction of mummy doing it with him as well.

"I know he will really appreciate having me by his side."

She is more than half way towards the £1,500 target, having received £830 from 33 donors.

"I was really overwhelmed by the donations," she added.

"When they started flooding in, I did get very emotional.

"It's really nice to know there are people out there kind enough to help and not want anything in return."

Ms Reynolds is holding a charity bingo night at the Williamson Street Community Centre in Parkhurst Road, Highbury, on September 19 from 6.30pm.
