Police have swooped on a home in Waltham Forest as part of a London-wide crackdown on drugs and weapons ahead of this weekend's Notting Hill Carnival.

Specialist officers from the Metropolitan Police's Territorial Support Group (TSG) carried out a dawn raid at an address in Withy Mead, Chingford, yesterday morning (August 25) at around 7.30am.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman, said: "A quantity of class B drugs and cash were recovered.

"An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply has been bailed to a date in October."

Around 1,000 officers took part in yesterday's operation which resulted in 57 raids across London and 62 arrests.

The majority of arrests involved drugs, violence and weapon offences, but also included assault on police and public order offences.

A handgun, gloves, and gaffer tape was confiscated by officers from one address in Tower Hamlets.

In the run-up to Britain's biggest street party on Sunday and Monday, officers will be carrying out weapon sweeps, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) operations, setting up knife arches and stepping up uniformed patrols.

Met Superintendent Robyn Williams, said: "Today's operation is aimed at ensuring that those who intend to cause trouble at Carnival are prohibited from doing so.

"We are committed to ensuring that Carnival remains a safe, vibrant and enjoyable event; troublemakers are not welcome. "If you know anyone who is planning to use the event to commit crime, please call Crimestoppers anonymously to help us keep the event safe for everyone."
