A man who cycled the length of the UK despite being diagnosed with terminal cancer has announced the amount he raised as he met a representative of Cancer Research UK.

51-year-old Frank Charles, who was diagnosed with inoperable non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in 2010, cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats from May 9 to May 30, completing “one of the last items on his bucket list” and raising £5,600 in the process.

Frank, of Chester Road, Wanstead, was driven to fundraise by his son Ashley’s tragically premature death at the age of 23 months in 1989 of Hirschsprung’s Disease.

Yesterday (August 26), he met Cancer Research’s Stacey Wilson and handed over a cheque of £2,800.

The other £2,800 will go to his own charity, Frank Charles’s Give a Gift Appeal, which is taking young families on a trip to Broadstairs, Kent, today (August 27).

He also intends to again do his annual Christmas Give a Gift appeal in aid of children in Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone.

Stacey Wilson said: “We are absolutely delighted that Frank successfully completed his charity bike ride to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK.

“He did lots of preparation for the ride and we can’t thank him enough for his support.”
