An innovative school building has been nominated for a prestigious national award.

Forest School’s Martin Centre for Innovation is in the building project of the year category, up to £10m budget, at this year’s Building Construction Industry (BCI) awards.

The centre, which was officially opened in September 2013, was designed for the school by architects Buckley Gray Yeoman and is the home of digital teaching, alongside hosting a range of educational activities.

It was named after benefactor Anthony Martin, who attended the school as a pupil between 1948 and 1957, and consists of three floors allowing for a range of educational activities.

The ground floor includes an open space which teachers and pupils use, the middle floor is a place where pupils can access the latest in information technology, and the top floor is a space half indoors and half outdoors overlooking the cricket pitch and the forest beyond, suitable for presentations, performances, recitals and gatherings.

Earlier this year, the building was shortlisted for an architecture award at the Royal Institute of British Architects’ 2015 awards.

The Snaresbrook school's bursar Diane Coombs said: “We are delighted that the Martin Centre for Innovation has been shortlisted for ‘building project of the year’ at this year’s British Construction Industry awards.

“Buckley Gray Yeoman have designed a great building for pupils – one that provides them with the space to develop and encourages collaborative learning.”

The BCI awards will to take place on October 14, at Grosvenor House Hotel, London.
