STREET ART could inspire some of the borough’s youngest residents after a school in Walthamstow was the latest to sign up for a huge, colourful mural.

Throughout the month of August painting has been taking place at Thomas Gamuel School in Colchester Road after headteacher Danielle Egonu-Obanye requested help from Wood Street Walls.

The not-for-profit company has been behind bright and bold murals popping up across the borough from random toasters in Linford Road to a battle scene outside Walthamstow Central.

After seeing their work, the headteacher asked for some of the temporary classrooms in the outside area, to be transformed with colour, in a drive to inspire creativity within the students.

Straight away WSW, founded by city worker Mark Clack, had the right man in mind for the job.

A spokesperson for Wood Street Walls said: “When it came to selecting the artist, Malarky's name was the first on our mind, as we wanted the murals to be fun, colourful and almost cartoon like.

“We were lucky to work with Malarky on our first wall in Leytonstone earlier this year and knew that he was the ideal fit.

“We're really excited to hear the student's and teacher's reaction and hope that the new murals will inspire the kids' artistic and creative sides."

When the new term begins WSW will be hosting a session with pupils at the school to see how they respond to the art.

Wood Street Walls is currently crowdfunding (www.woodstreetstudios.co.uk) to pay for community art spaces in Waltham Forest.

A Malarky-designed Little Free Library is also being displayed outside of the school for teachers and pupils.
