A pizza chef was injured after a build up of fat and oil saw a restaurant catch fire for the second time this year.

Firefighters from Walthamstow, Chingford and Homerton attended the scene at Wood Oven BBQ Restaurant in George Lane, South Woodford, on Sunday afternoon (August 30) at around 12pm.

On arrival emergency crews learnt that a chef had attempted to tackle the blaze and suffered burns to his hand, a bump to the head and smoke inhalation.

He was treated on the scene by London Ambulance Service and taken to Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone for further treatment.

The blaze, which was extinguished after two hours, saw part of the restaurants ground floor damaged and the extraction ducting destroyed.

A section of a hairdressers next door was also damaged.

Fire investigators attended the incident and said that the fire started when built up fat and oil in the ducting caught alight.

The blaze follows a previous fire at the kebab restaurant in March which saw 25ft flames in the kitchen.

Sam Simmons, 38, of George Lane, South Woodford, witnessed the fire.

He said: "To be honest it was a very traumatic situation.

"There were people in the flats above so everyone was knocking on doors telling them to get out.

"It really was a horrible incident because the fire was spreading so quickly.

"It is an old building so it makes it easy for the fire to catch."

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: "The Brigade advise all restaurant owners to ensure their extraction systems and ducting are kept clean as a build up of fat can lead to a fire.

"If a fire breaks out our advice is to get out and call 999.

"Never try and tackle the blaze yourself.

"Attempting to fight fire without the correct skills and equipment can have catastrophic consequences and lead to injury and even worse.

"Fortunately this chap wasn’t seriously hurt, but it’s only luck that prevented him from being badly injured."
