A shopkeeper has been ordered to pay over £1100 after being caught selling alcohol to a 15-year-old by a trading standards team.

Waltham Forest council's trading standards visited Cellar Wine, in Kings Parade, Chingford, on September 19 last year as part of an alcohol test-purchase operation.

On this occasion a 15-year-old child was allowed to buy a bottle of WKD Original Blue.

The owner of the business, Inan Aygun, was subsequently interviewed and prosecuted by trading standards for the sale of alcohol to a person under the age of 18.

A hearing took place at Thames Magistrates Court on August 28, where Mr Aygun sent in a written guilty plea.

He was fined £300, and ordered to pay costs of £779 and a £30 victim surcharge.

Cllr Clyde Loakes, deputy leader of Waltham Forest council, said: “We take a zero tolerance approach to underage alcohol sales in Waltham Forest, and anyone caught doing it can expect to be prosecuted.

“Traders should be well aware of their responsibility to protect the welfare of young people, and we’ll continue to carry out test purchases to ensure they have the necessary procedures in place.”
