The Salvation Army has been announced as a Sainsbury’s local charity of the year.

Barkingside’s store, in Tanners Lane, will raise money for the Woodford Corps, in Daisy Road, South Woodford.

The Christian charity marks its 150th anniversary this year.

It works to provide food and clothing for the needy and help others with housing and jobs and employment opportunities.

To celebrate the announcement a launch day will take place at the store soon when customers will get a chance to meet representatives from the charity and learn more about the work they do.

Customers voted for the charity in the seventh year of the scheme, which has raised £7million across the country.

A spokesman for the Woodford Corps, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to be chosen as the Sainsbury’s Barkingside’s local charity of year.

“We can’t wait to work together and raise the profile of our charity over the next year.

“Thank you to all the customers that voted for us, we really appreciate the support.”
