A group dedicated to combatting extremism through education and sport have appointed a former youth mayor to join their team.
Karishma Mahomed will join the Leyton based Salaam Peace management committee after roles as a young advisor to Waltham Forest council and acting as youth mayor in 2014.
The Salaam Peace Community Engagement Programme was launched in 2009 working with people aged between two and 65 with the aim of promoting unity, respect and tolerance among the community
Ms Mahomed, who has also volunteered at the Soul Project in Wood Street, Walthamstow and George Mitchell School, said it was an absolute honour to join the committee.
She said: “I am able to work alongside amazing people who all like myself have the passion and vision to always make an impact and change the lives around us for the better through their continuous support and friendly nature."
Founder of Salaam Peace Sab Bham praised her 'can do' attitude on her appointment.
"Those of us who have been blessed to know over the last few years are aware that she is an outstanding young lady with a many qualities, an amazing amount of experience and had huge impact in the community.
“We at Salaam Peace work at a very high pace and she will add to the fantastic team we already have.
“Karishma will add a youth voice and knowledge that will help us to shape and develop our offer through changing times."
