Five-thousands households are being asked to get involved in the next stage of the £30m mini Holland cycling scheme.

Walthamstow residents living in the Markhouse Road area will be consulted next year on how the cycling scheme is implemented in their area.

Early engagement began this week with residents being asked to put forward their thoughts on the scheme, and what roads could be improved.

The area has been named ‘Markhouse Village’ for the purposes of the programme, according to the council’s website.

Roads included in the area are Hoe Street, Selbourne Road, Markhouse Road and Lea Bridge Road, home to around 5,832 households.

Waltham Forest council won funding for the programme in 2014 to make cycling, walking and travelling around the borough safer.

In each area there are changes to traffic flow and some roads are closed completely, with public spaces being added and cycling-friendly traffic lights, which let people on bikes move off early.

Plans for the scheme in Lea Bridge Road were approved by cabinet on Tuesday.

The plans for Lea Bridge Road include an attempt to make Whipps Cross Roundabout safer and revive the economy in the road, which stretches from the Leytonstone/Walthamstow border to Hackney.
