The countdown to the UK's biggest canoeing event is over.

Thousands of spectators are expected at opening of the International Canoe Federation Canoe Slalom World Cup event at Lee Valley White Water Centre near Waltham Abbey today (September 16).

300 of the world’s top Canoe Slalom athletes have arrived in the area to battle it out at the largest global canoeing event outside of the Olympic Games this week.

The event, which could see up to 10,000 watching, will see competitors from 55 countries taking on the 2012 course between today and Sunday (September 20).

World Champions will be crowned in five disciplines and could be selected to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

A spokesman for Lee Valley White Water Centre said: "The event will sees the World Championships return to the UK for the first time since 1995.

"It comes hot on the heels of last year’s Canoe Slalom World Cup, where the British team scooped an impressive medal haul of seven golds and one silver.

"As well as world-class sport there will be plenty of free family-friendly activities on offer, with a bouncy castle, climbing walls and even an opportunity to try paddling.

"The five days of fierce competition will witness some nail-biting action."
