Loughton High Street has been reopened following an evacuation after three suspected mortar shells were handed in to police.

The three suspected explosives were handed in to Loughton Police Station's front desk at 11.40am today (September 17) after they had been found in the loft of a house.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes and businesses while a 100 metre cordon was put in place.

The devices were secured in the rear yard of the station for assessment by the MOD's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

The team, who attended shortly after, have declared the items safe.

Cordons around the town have been stood down and roads have been reopened.

An Essex Police Spokesman said: "Police put a 100 metre cordon in place around Loughton Police Station and evacuated premises after three suspected mortar shells were brought to the station by a member of the public at 11.40am today.

"They were secured in the rear yard of the police station for assessmet by the MOD's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

"They have attended and declared the items safe and the cordons were stood down shortly after 1.05pm."
