Company fix up Lagoon

THE company running Leyton Leisure Lagoon said it had improved hygiene and made repairs, following a Guardian investigation.

Two weeks ago we revealed the unsanitary state of the sauna and steam room at the leisure centre in Leyton High Road.

Following customer complaints, we visited the centre and found several problems, including the steam room not working, two mother and baby changing rooms closed due to a leaking roof and puddles of water on the floor.

The sauna light was out, forcing customers to sit in the dark, and there were dirty walls, graffiti, missing bench slabs and no locks on the doors.

Initially Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) did not answer questions about the state of the centre's facilities.

But it has now acknowledged the problems and said that they have been fixed, or are being fixed.

GLL said that repairs have been made to the steam room and it is now fully functioning. The staff rota has been adjusted so there are more cleaning inspections.

There are more chairs in the steam room and sauna so that six people can use each at any one time.

GLL also admitted that staff doing regular inspections must remove any excess water.

The company said that, since the Guardian article, it has also repaired the sauna light, removed graffiti and obtained parts to fix the ceiling leak, meaning that two changing cubicles will be re-opened.

Centre manager Ben Brumfit and GLL eastern regional manager Blair Cottam have invited customers to meet them at the centre if they want to discuss their concerns.

Mr Brumfit said: "Leyton Leisure Lagoon is an extremely popular facility and attracts in the region of 300,000 visits every year.

"The equipment at the leisure centre is serviced and checked on a regular basis. Unfortunately faults with equipment do occur and we recognise that it is essential for repairs to be completed as soon as possible."
