RULES on dropped kerbs in Redbridge could be relaxed to allow more people to park in their own driveway.

The council’s current regulations state residents cannot have the pavement in front of their house altered unless the forecourt reaches a minimum size.

Plans are being put in place to change this rule.

Residents would be allowed to seek permission as long as their vehicle would not hang over the pavement when parked.

Anyone who breaks this rule would be fined.

The plans are due to be discussed at Neighbourhoods Service Committee on October 7.

Cllr Baldesh Nijjar, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, said: “We’ve heard the voices of many residents who are frustrated at the current policy because it doesn’t allow off street parking for smaller cars or take into account the range of ways people can park their car on a drive or forecourt.

“We think a change is sensible, especially in a time where so many residents own cars.”

Cllr Nijjar added: “This is a solution that will allow more of our residents to enjoy the freedom of a dropped kerb.

“Should the proposal go through then officers would contact residents that have recently been refused applications and tell them about the new arrangements so they could consider applying again.”
