The Mayor of Waltham Forest has judged a free speech competition on ‘what it is to be British’ at a primary school.
Cllr Saima Mahmud attended St. Mary's Primary School in Brooke Road, Walthamstow where she was impressed by the children’s oratory ability.
The pupils spoke about the school's Christian values and what it means to be British in the modern day at the event on Tuesday (September 29).
Year 6 pupil Baxter O'Leary took first place.
He explained how people must be tolerant of other faiths, uphold the law and support democracy.
Baxter concluded his speech saying: "This is what make you British, not a cup of Earl Grey tea."
Assistant headteacher Leann Valiquette said: "The Mayor's attendance made the day extra special for the children, staff and parents.
"The children did really well in front of a large crowd. They all had their speeches memorised and spoke with elocution and style.
"Our youngest contestant was in Year 2, she did amazingly well to deliver her speech in front of the school."
