Walkers, runners and cyclists of all ages clocked up the equivalent distance to Beijing from Waltham Forest in the first week of a project to get the borough moving.
Participants of Beat the Street East London have got off to a flying start with schools, families and groups competing to travel the longest distance in eight weeks.
The project is being supported by the National Charity Partnership, a collaboration between Diabetes UK, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and Tesco.
All those taking part in the free scheme tap their card, provided by the charity, on ‘beat boxes’ set up around the borough to register their movements.
The team that walks the furthest and the team with the highest average points will each receive a cheque for £1,000 for their community and there are vouchers of £25 to spend at Decathlon on sports equipment for other prize winners.
