A variety of comedy nights, film screenings and story-telling sessions have been announced to celebrate Black History Month in Waltham Forest.

Throughout October, libraries will be hosting exhibitions to promote tolerance and respect in the borough.

On Thursday (October 8) children can take part in a Brer Rabbit-themed workshop at the William Morris Gallery in Forest Road, Walthamstow.

The Sons of Blighty exhibition, collated by The Write Network, features oral histories from British Caribbean men going back to the 1960s at Leytonstone Library,

Leyton Library will host a screening of a documentary about the life and death of human rights activist Malcolm X on Friday (October 16).

The end of the month will be marked by the return of the Black History Comedy Night at the Assembly Hall on Friday (October 30).

Council Leader, Chris Robbins, said he was looking forward to attending some of the events and meeting people.

He said: “Black residents have made a huge contribution to enriching life in Waltham Forest, and we aim to recognise that over the course of October.

“But Black History Month is more than just a celebration of black culture and achievements; it’s also an important way of promoting tolerance and respect in Waltham Forest.

"We want all residents to continue to enjoy a good quality life in the borough, and hope to see as many people as possible enjoying all the free community celebrations we’ve got lined up between now and 2016.”
