WHIPPS Cross Hospital will directly benefit from the £49.6m sale of the former London Chest Hospital.

Profits from the sale to housing association group Circle Housing in August this year will go to the new specialist Barts Heart Centre and the Leytonstone hospital.

Funds will go towards upgrading IT at Whipps, including the purchase of modern equipment and wiring to replace the outdated infrastructure.

Professor Charles Knight, Managing Director of St Bartholomew’s Hospital, said: “The London Chest Hospital served us well, but the historic building was not fit for the provision of specialist modern facilities that our community deserves.”

Opened in May this year, the Barts Heart Centre aims to save 1,000 lives a year by bringing together for the first time in London specialist multi-skilled cardiovascular teams operating under the one roof, performing more heart surgery and cardiac procedures than any other centre in Europe.
