An ‘inspirational’ physics teacher has won a highly regarded science prize for academic achievements from his pupils.

Mark Dixon from Bancroft’s School in Woodford Green, was recognized for his 'outstanding' work by receiving a Teachers Award from the Institute of Physics (IOP) on Thursday (November 5).

The ceremony was attended by high profile researchers, academics, policy makers and industrialists to celebrate teachers who had raised the state of physics and science in schools.

Former student Harriet Bartlett, who is now studying veterinary science at Cambridge, said that Mr Dixon was responsible for her love of science.

She said: “Mr Dixon went over and above the call of duty every single day and was the most inspirational teacher I have ever had.

“I can honestly say I would not be where I am today if I hadn't had Mr Dixon as my teacher and friend.

“He embraced any challenge or question thrown his way and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award.”

The prize consisted of a certificate, a paperweight and a cheque for the sum of £300.
