The introduction of girls' rugby at West Hatch High School has seen instant success with the girls unbeaten in their first three competitive matches.

The new initiative has been launched at the High Road, Chigwell school by PE teacher Ray Flowers and teacher Joella Dawkes at the end of the last school year.

Mr Flowers said: "The girls have worked tirelessly to get themselves up to speed with the laws of the game, how to tackle and how to not be afraid of getting muddy."

The team took part in the recent Essex Festival of Rugby and were unbeaten in their three matches.

Ms Dawkes added: "Not only did the girls perform superbly but won all three matches, including one against William Edwards school who possess four club rugby players, a permanent link with Thurrock Ladies RFC and their Head of Girls PE is an ex-England international."
