THE SHADOW Chancellor will speak at a public meeting in Walthamstow.

John McDonnell will visit the borough to talk about the new Labour leadership's ideas for a fairer economy and society, next week.

McDonnell was appointed shadow to Chancellor George Osborne after Jeremy Corbyn's landslide victory in the Labour leadership election in September.

He has since been developing alternative ideas on how to create a fair economy, reverse cuts to tax credits and other vital services.

The shadow chancellor will talk about plans by Labour's new leaders to “challenge inequality and social injustice” with plans to reverse tax credit cuts and tackle tax avoidance.

The meeting organised by the Labour Representation Committee will take place at St Barnabas, Foster Hall in St Barnabas Road, Walthamstow from 7pm.

Other speakers include Labour councillor Shabana Dhedhi, Steve White from the Waltham Forest branch of the National Union of Teachers chair, Fire Brigades Union general secretary Matt Wrack and Maria Exall of the Communication Workers' Union.

Forest Ward councillor Gerry Lyons said: “John McDonnell, the shadow Chancellor, coming to speak in Waltham Forest is a fantastic opportunity for our residents to hear the economic strategy for the next Labour Government.

“It is sure to be an exciting and lively meeting and one not to be missed by anyone with an interest in the future of our country.”
