AN ISLAMIC extremist who was banned from leaving the UK has been arrested in Hungary.

Trevor Brooks, also known as Abu Izzadeen from Leyton was stopped by Hungarian police last week, despite being banned from leaving the UK.

Izzadeen, a former Christian who converted to Islam on his 18th birthday was jailed in 2008 for financing terrorism and was supposed to remain in the country.

But he was detained by officers at a crossing point on the Hungarian border - while bound for Romania on a train, according to The Guardian.

It is not clear if he was heading for Syria.

He was stopped alongside fellow British extremist Simon Keeler, a Muslim convert, who was acquitted in July of planning to travel to Syria to join ISIS after being found in the back of a lorry at Dover.

Simon Keeler, 44, has also served time in prison for funding terrorism and was jailed for 15 months after admitting possession of false identity documents.

Both men appeared in Budapest Capital court under armed guard and could be extradited back to the UK.

The two men were taken into custody by Hungarian police because they did not have legal documents entitling them to stay in the EU member state.

Izzadeen, formerly of Brierley Road, Leyton gained notoriety in 2006 after he heckled former home secretary John Reid at a public meeting in Leyton.

He branded Mr Reid as a 'tyrant' and an 'enemy of Islam' before being escorted out by security guards.

He has also been associated with Islamist firebrand Anjem Choudary.

Like Choudary, he has lived off the state in the past, claiming up to £1,000 a month in benefits while living in a council house.
