With more heavy rain predicted in the coming weeks, landowners have been urged to protect against flooding by checking their ditches.

Blocked ditches are a major cause of flooded roads and landowners have a duty to make sure they are cleared, Essex County Council has said.

The council is advising people with ditches on or adjacent to their properties to have a regular maintenance programme in place.

It can also take enforcement measures to ensure landowners remove blockages, often caused by a build-up of leaves and silt.

Highways delivery councillor Eddie Johnson said: “As we experience more intense and heavy rainfall, the importance of maintaining the capacity of local drainage systems has never been greater.”

He added: “Flooding on the highway increases the likelihood of potholes forming, and as temperatures drop below zero in winter, can clearly cause vehicles to skid in icy conditions.

“I would urge landowners to work with the council in a bid to ensure Essex roads stay flood free this winter.”
