Camps have returned to a hotspot for illegal encampments underneath a busy road.

The site held almost 20 Romanian nationals under the North Circular on Advent Way, Edmonton, and was cleared by police last month.

However, only more than a month after being cleared, it has a new camp site.

This is now the third site to be found since August in the same place and comes 11 months after a shanty site was found in woodland off of Advent Way.

This has led to serious questions being raised by residents in the area who believe they have been “abandoned”.

Aykimi Edwards, of Cavendish Road, close to the camp site said: “It is a non-stop cycle down here. People come, police clear them, more come and camp there. There is no planning.

“It is a joint effort from all parties who cleared the camp site the last two times. People are being dropped off here regularly. There is no control of the situation, we have been abandoned.”

Residents believe the area is being tarnished by the “constant stream” of people camping under the busy a-road.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said she uses the road often and claims to see tens of people camping in the area.

She said: “I drive on the road to get to work in Palmers Green and you can see the camp site quite easily whilst driving.

“It is not very discreet and people are being dropped off there regularly – we need to see proper action and not just a reaction.”

An encampment of Romanian immigrants were accused of turning a beauty spot into something that resembles ‘the back streets of Rio’ in September, 2014.

This area was cleared by Transport for London a month after being uncovered and the authority promised to keep the site free of illegal encampments.

The Metropolitan Police have been asked to comment.

Thames Water, who own the land, have been approached for a comment.
