A LEYTON school has been recognised for its continuous success in sport after scooping the top gong at the borough sports awards - for the second year in a row.

Norlington School for Boys has been praised for producing sporting excellence, since taking home the U18 Team of the Year Award at the Waltham Forest Sports Awards, earlier this month.

The team has not been beaten for three years - despite facing touch opponents including those from independent schools in Essex and East Anglia.

Other nominees from the school include the table tennis and rowing team, while head of PE Abhay Bygott was recognised for his voluntary work and teacher Mary McPortland was up for Coach of the Year.

Assistant head Paul Hobbs said: "We are really pleased that our sporting excellence is matching our high academic standards.

"We have been working very closely with Essex CCC and recently installed new crickets nets to allow boys the best opportunities to succeed.

"This group of boys are not only very talented, but they are all role models too. All of them have completed a Cricket leadership qualification have worked with young students in the school and in local primary schools.

"They deserve this award for all they have achieved."

The U18 team captain Najeeb Mirzaman said: "We are really pleased with the award, the team has a good spirit.

"We have been given lots of opportunities to play and be coached to a high level. Thank you to Ms McPortland who has worked with us for 4 years."

Council leader Chris Robbins said: “I was delighted to be part of the Waltham Forest Sports Awards 2015 and particularly pleased to see Norlington win the Junior Team of the Year Award.

"I very much look forward to hearing that members of the Norlington U15 team go on to improve the fortunes of our County and National teams in future years."

In 2014 Norlington collected the same accolade for their Table Tennis team who compete in a National League.
