A fresh rallying call has been issued in a long-running campaign calling for safety measures for a “desperately dangerous” roundabout.

Redbridge’s Liberal Democrats is calling on Transport for London (TfL) to install pedestrian crossings and traffic signals at Charlie Brown’s Roundabout in South Woodford.

Lib Dem Roding ward councillor Gwyneth Deakins said she and residents had been fighting for years to get pedestrian crossings across the approach roads to the roundabout.

About seven years ago TfL drew up plans to implement measures but work was called off at the last minute.

Now TfL are again carrying out feasibility studies for safety measures with plans for signalisation.

Many people cross the roundabout.

For example children and parents going to and from local schools such as Oakdale, Beals and Woodbridge, and people going to shop in Tesco's on Southend Road.

The pedestrian subway under the North Circular has flooded several times recently meaning that anyone needing to get across the A406 have to cross the busy roundabout.

The W14 bus route is also known to sometimes terminate at the roundabout and passengers who want to get to the Maybank area often walk across the roundabout.

Cllr Deakins said: “Charlie Brown's Roundabout has been desperately dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists for far too long.

“Local people have been campaigning for safety measures for years and have been let down badly in the past when promised improvements were shelved.

“It's crucial that this time we pin down the Mayor and Transport for London to make them get this vital project done.”

Alan Bristow, director of road space management at TfL, said it was considering both a fully signalised and stand-alone crossings as options.

The possibility of stop lines at the roundabout is also being explored.

He said: “We are keen to improve the pedestrian facilities at Charlie Brown’s roundabout and are considering plans to introduce signalised crossings.

"Before arriving at a final design we will fully assess the feasibility of possible solutions.

"Following consultation we expect work to start at the beginning of 2018."
