A London Assembly member has joined calls for safety measures at a roundabout which she claimed pedestrians “do not dare attempt to cross”.

Liberal Democrat leader at London Assembly, Caroline Pidgeon, yesterday joined colleague Roding ward councillor Gwyneth Deakins in calling on Transport for London (TfL) to install pedestrian crossings and traffic signals at Charlie Brown’s Roundabout in South Woodford.

She conducted a pollution test at the site with the results expected within the week.

About seven years ago TfL drew up plans to implement measures but work was called off at the last minute.

Now TfL are again carrying out feasibility studies for safety measures with plans for signalisation.

The roundabout is used by children and parents walking to and from local schools such as Oakdale, Beals and Woodbridge, and people going to shop in Tesco on Southend Road.

The pedestrian subway under the North Circular has flooded several times recently meaning that anyone needing to get across the A406 have to cross the busy roundabout.

The W14 bus route is also known to sometimes terminate at the roundabout and passengers who want to get to the Maybank area often walk across the roundabout.

Caroline Pidgeon said: “I have spoken to many people in the area and they are frustrated and bewildered at TfL's failure to provide safe crossing facilities at the roundabout.

“Many local people take their cars for relatively short journeys, rather than walk or cycle, because they dare not attempt to cross the roads there.

“This adds to the congestion!

“I heard about one nasty accident that happened at the roundabout.

“I fully support the campaign to get pedestrian crossings and whatever other safety measures may be needed.

“I will continue the fight for this project in City Hall.”

Alan Bristow, director of road space management at TfL, said it was considering both a fully signalised and stand-alone crossings as options.

The possibility of stop lines at the roundabout is also being explored.

He said: “We are keen to improve the pedestrian facilities at Charlie Brown’s roundabout and are considering plans to introduce signalised crossings.

"Before arriving at a final design we will fully assess the feasibility of possible solutions.

"Following consultation we expect work to start at the beginning of 2018."
