The low water levels in Wanstead Park are the result of repair works by the City of London Corporation, it has emerged.

City of London said it reduced the water level of the Heron Pond in Wanstead Park to carry out statutory repair works on two concrete panels of its dam.

It has also reduced water flow to the Perch Pond and Ornamental Water, in order to contain the growth of an invasive Floating Pennywort weed.

The news comes after park users voiced fears of dangerously low water levels in the park killing wildlife there.

A City of London Corporation spokesman said: “We are now working with the Environment Agency and hydrologists to find a longer-term solution. In the meantime please bear with us while we carry out this important work.”
