An apprentice has won an award for his work helping to construct Walthamstow Stadium.

Billy Caney, of Handsworth Avenue, Highams Park, was given best overall performer by his construction apprenticeship training agency, K10, in its annual apprentice awards.

The 24-year-old won the top prize out of 175 apprentices for his professionalism and commitment.

He was nominated by his supervisors from both K10 and the construction arm of L&Q, Quadrant Construction, for which he has worked for six months at its Walthamstow Stadium development.

When Billy left school he did electronics at college and worked as a trainee electrician at the Olympic Park.

Unfortunately after this he struggled to find any suitable work and was unemployed for some time.

His job centre advisor arranged for him to attend an apprenticeship open day and he managed to secure an electrical apprenticeship with K10 apprenticeship training agency.

Billy's training has included learning about manual handling, health and safety and fire safety.

He is in the process of gaining a Level 3 Electrical Installation qualification, for which he attends college every Friday.

Billy said: "I would just like to thank K10 for this award.

“It was good to be recognised and I really appreciate it as it has motivated me further."

Jack Speckman, K10’s Senior Apprenticeship Manager and Billy Caney’s supervisor, said: “Billy is a real asset to his team and is always keen take on a new task and help out wherever he can.

“He has proved himself to be highly dedicated, a diligent worker and a quick learner.

“His bubbly personality and great work ethic have made him a great apprentice to work with.”
