The number of pupils achieving five good GCSE grades has dropped at all but one school in Epping Forest.

The King Harold Business and Enterprise Academy in Waltham Abbey had 41 per cent of its GCSE pupils receive five or more A* to C grades including English and maths in 2015, according to government figures released today (January 21).

The figure is up from 38 per cent in 2014, the only improvement in the key criteria across the district.

Headteacher Kim Thackray joined the school permanently last year, and she said the academy’s rise is set to continue.

She said: “The school has had a complete transformation in the last year to 18 months.

“The school is fully staffed with specialist teachers and they are of a good calibre.

“Recent data on the school has shown the progress is in line with or better than expected.”

She added: “It is really good news which shows the school is moving forward at a rapid rate.

“We are the only school in Epping Forest going forward… the work ethic from the kids is amazing, they are keen to be really successful.”

Although every other school in the district had more than the national average of 53.8 per cent of pupils hitting the key target, levels dropped from the year before.

Chris Seward is the headteacher of Davenant Foundation School in Loughton, which was the highest performing state school with 76 per cent of pupils getting five or more A* to C grades including English and maths.

“We are very pleased, it is a great credit to all the students and staff and all the staff,” he said.

Asked about a two per cent drop year-on-year, he said: “GCSEs are getting more difficult, that process is going to continue for the next few years.

“All students in all schools have worked really hard and done well.”
