PLANS are afoot to replace the jumble of out-buildings, temporary buildings and tin sheds behind the old town hall with a small development of 18 two and three-bedroom family homes at affordable rents.
If the scheme receives planning approval, the work will be carried out by the Christian Action Housing Association, headed up by chief executive Mark Hayes.
CAHA's aim is to use the latest technology and design to reduce energy costs for tenants and produce a low carbon output.
A spokesman said it was the association's ambition to create a simple and striking modern design that would complement the adjacent Victorian buildings.
Mr Hayes told the Guardian: "This is a wonderful opportunity to provide high quality affordable housing in a location that has excellent local amenities and transport links.
"We are very excited about the scheme, as it provides an excellent setting with the potential to achieve a building that will be at the cutting edge of design.
