Witnesses heard a loud bang and a cloud of dust as a roof collapsed and scaffolding crashed into a busy road this morning.

Firefighters were called at 10am today (February 3) to the house in Queens Road, Walthamstow.

Three people were led to safety via the back garden and no one was hurt or trapped in the roof collapse.

Humza Bashir, who works in Munir Food Stores opposite, said it was lucky the collapse did not happen in rush hour when children were walking or being given a lift to school.

Edinburgh Primary School and Low Hall Children’s Centre are located in the same road.

He said: “There was a loud bang and a cloud of smoke and dust, I ran outside to see what was happening.

“Usually it is quite busy on this road so it is lucky there was no cars driving along the road or people walking on the pavement at this time.

“The people inside the house were downstairs at the time too so they were not hurt.”

His father Mohammed Bashir, manager of the shop, was also working in the store when the roof collapsed.

He said: “There was a big bang and I thought someone had thrown rubbish down from the top of the roof.

“I couldn’t believe it when I looked outside, it is very lucky no one was hurt.

“I heard there were people inside but they got out OK.

A section of Queens Road remains closed with scaffolding debris strewn across the road.
