A headteacher was praised as his school improved to ‘good’ in all areas in an Ofsted inspection report.

Inspectors found improvements had been made in a report released today (February 5) for George Mitchell secondary and primary schools, in Farmer Road, Leyton.

The report said the school was thriving under the "determined and hardworking" headteacher Saeed Hussain.

It also praised the behaviour of pupils, the commitment of teachers and described the governing body as "highly motivated".

The Ofsted report said: "The school is improving quickly and securely.

“The headteacher, senior leadership team and members of the governing body are ambitious for the school.

"They have devoted their energy to successful improvement of teaching and pupil outcomes."

The school was rated ‘requires improvement’ in 2013, just three six months prior to Mr Hussein's appointment.

This fresh report comes on the back of a successful 12 months for George Mitchell School, which scored its best ever GCSE results and were rated in the top one per cent for improvement in maths nationally.

Earlier this week it was also agreed by the Waltham Forest planning committee that the primary and secondary school sites will be demolished and completely rebuilt.

Headteacher Mr Hussain said: “I am delighted that we have now officially been judged a ‘good’ school.

"Inspectors were full of praise for the direction the school has taken and spoke highly of both staff and students.

"This is a very good report.

“The few areas for further improvement are easily tackled and we will now be focusing our energies on working towards achieving an ‘outstanding’ judgement in the next inspection.

“We have much to celebrate.”

Chair of governors Sue Milligan said she was delighted with the result.

She said: “The governors are delighted Ofsted has recognised the leadership of our headteacher Saeed Hussain and the hard work and dedication of staff and pupils, as well as the support of parents and carers.

"Having been recognised as 'good', we now look to the future and building on these excellent foundations.

“These are very exciting times for George Mitchell School.”
