Over 140 people attended a public meeting on what the people of Walthamstow can do to support refugees fleeing persecution.

Yvette Cooper, chair of Labour's taskforce on refugees, and Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy were at the meeting on Wednesday (February 3) evening at the Walthamstow School for Girls, in Church Hill.

Speakers at the event included Zrinka Bralo, chief executive of Migrants Organise, Bilal Mahmood, Walthamstow Labour party east branch chairman, Aisha Abubakar, student at Kingston University, and Yuksel Gonul, member of Kurdish community and human rights activist working to support Syrian refugees.

Stella Creasy said: “We organised the meeting as a chance for Wathamstow residents to come together and discuss how we can practically help those affected by this crisis, with 11million fleeing Syria alone, nearly half the whole population, we know Britain must play its part in their future.

She added: "Walthamstow was named Wilcumstowe in the Doomsday Book, it’s clear that our community still lives up to that name and anyone who wants to join us in this work should get in touch with my office."
