Two teenagers came to the rescue of an elderly man who suffered a fall in a busy road.

Aaliyah Bailey and Susan Alebiosu, both 14, comforted the man after he fell over on High Road, Leytonstone, on February 1.

The Buxton School pupils helped get him on his feet and treated wounds on his hands while directing an ambulance to the scene.

The pair stayed talking to the man to comfort him until the paramedics arrived.

Susan, from Walthamstow, said: "I have been taught by mum and by the school that if you see someone who needs your help then you help them.

"The school place a big emphasis on being community-minded with projects like the Duke of Edinburgh and Random Acts of Kindness.

“We wanted to put that to use."

Aaliyah, from Stratford, said she was happy to help out in the situation.

She added: "I had such a good feeling after what we did.

“To know that you didn't standby when someone needed help that you did something about it is such a good feeling.

"The man was really thankful.

“He kept saying 'thank you for helping me'.

“That meant a lot to know that we did some good."

Buxton communities leader Carol Moloney said she was proud of Aaliyah and Susan.

She said: "The school places a great deal of emphasis on community action, student voice and building character as well as academic learning.

"We offer students a range of skills, qualifications and experiences which helps students thrive - both in and outside the classroom.

“Susan and Aaliyah should be very proud of themselves."
