Stella Creasy MP has spoken out about the fear women have of sexual harassment on the streets of Walthamstow as she invites people to a day of action to celebrate International Women’s Day.

The Walthamstow Labour MP will take part in a march to tackle street harassment and she has also organised a “feminist bootcamp” to develop the leadership skills of women on Saturday (March 5).

Guest speakers at the day will include the chef Jack Monroe, ITN news presenter Charlene White, and comedian Ava Vidal.

As well as leadership workshops, there will be a cake competition, an opportunity for women to contribute their stories to a history project and a free children’s entertainment room.

Speaking about the day Stella Creasy said: “We can’t shy away from the fact that we have a growing problem of sexual harassment in Walthamstow and that many women don’t feel safe on our local roads.

“For many years now local women have been working together to raise addressing this up the agenda, with the Take Back the Streets (TBTS) group challenging public services to act.

“Now TBTS have produced a really helpful guide to tell residents how to report this issue and the police have been working with us to tackle this problem, so we’ll be marching from the bell corner to Walthamstow School for Girls to highlight this and challenge the idea sexual harassment is just a ‘part of everyday life’.

“Our free feminist bootcamp is about inspiring women of all ages in Walthamstow to achieve their leadership potential.

“We want to work from one generation to another to share insights and support to overcome the discrimination women face as well as encourage them to get involved in community activism."

Campaigners will gather at 12.15pm at the Bell corner of Hoe Street.

It will progress along Hoe Street to the corner of Church Hill and then onto the Walthamstow School for Girls.

Then from 1.30pm until 5pm, Stella will be holding the "feminist bootcamp" at the school.
