AN ELDERLY motorist had a narrow escape when a concrete slab smashed into his car after being thrown from a motorway flyover in Woodford Bridge.

The 69-year-old was heading southbound along the A406 near Charlie Brown's roundabout at 7.15pm on Monday, May 21, when the missile imbedded itself in the rear of his Vauxhall Astra, missing him by a couple of feet.

The driver, who suffered a number of minor injuries during the incident, managed to pull over safely after hearing a terrifying bang behind him, but was unable to identify the perpetrators.

The attack comes just four months after another driver was injured on the A406 when a traffic cone was thrown from a footbridge near the Waterworks roundabout in Walthamstow.

The 41-year-old managed to bring his vehicle safely to a halt, despite suffering facial injuries during the incident, which left his windscreen shattered.

In 2004 a gang of youths caused chaos in the same stretch of road, when they dropped bricks from the M11 flyover at Charlie Brown's roundabout, smashing the windows of three articulated lorries.

The gang, a group of ten or 12 teenagers, made their escape before police were able to reach the scene.

Witnesses to the most recent attack should call Ilford police on 8345 2613.
