Pupils from Muslim and Catholic schools joined together in a sponsored walk around the Olympic Park for charity.

More than 240 children from St Joseph's Catholic Junior School, in Vicarage Road, Leyton, joined 100 pupils from Newham’s Quwwat-ul-Islam Girls school at the Stratford park.

Macmillan Cancer Support and the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD) were supported as the children raised awareness for how far people have to walk for water.

St Joseph’s has raised more than £400 and is adding to the cause with weekly cake sales, mufti days and “money wells” in each class where children can donate their pocket money.

Headteacher, John Alexander said: “At St Joseph's we want the children to learn beyond the classroom and truly become citizens of the world.”

In an added boost, fundraising efforts will be doubled by the Government’s department for international development up until May.

Organiser at Quwwat-ul-Islam Girls school, Suraiya Zannath, said: “Working together to help the community shows how united we all are.

“Together, we achieve more."

CAFOD’s representative in Leyton, Chris Driscoll added: “We’d like to say a huge thanks to the pupils at St Joseph’s for their generosity.”
