A group of campaigners has said ‘every penny helps’ when it comes to securing better park facilities for their children.

Friends of Churchfields Park has been working to get better play equipment and tackle chronic flooding at the park in South Woodford for almost two years.

The group was awarded a £12,000 grant last month by Tesco’s Bags of Help programme, which donates shoppers’ 5p bag charges to local causes.

The park is now in with a chance of winning a share of a £1,000 grant offered by Waitrose’s Community Matters scheme.

Churchfields campaigner and mother-of-two Emma Lynch said: “Literally every penny helps in our case.

“While we are trying to secure new playground equipment and maintain and repair what is already in the park, there are other smaller things we need funding for.

“That money could go to putting up a sign, as there are none in the park at the moment, or planting some bulbs.”

MP for Chingford and Woodford Green Iain Duncan Smith has written to Redbridge Council urging them to carry out a £5,000 topographical survey on the park to facilitate a new drainage system.

Ms Lynch said: “Iain Duncan Smith has had a reply from the council saying they will carry out the survey so we are hoping that will come soon.”

Anybody who wants to donate can put their tokens in the Friends of Churchfields Park box at South Woodford Waitrose in High Road before April 25.
