Striking junior doctors at Whipps Cross Hospital are marching from picket lines to spread their message to the general public.

As part of their 48-hour walkout, the medics are holding a Meet the Doctors event in Walthamstow’s High Street from 1pm today.

More than 50 junior staff at the hospital have left their posts and will be talking with members of the public to explain their reasons for striking and to offer basic life support skills.

BMA committee member and junior doctor, Dr Niki Fitzgerald, said: “The government has imposed a contract which damages patient safety and further erodes working conditions within the NHS under the banner of a ‘seven day NHS’ it is not willing to fund.

“They are stretching doctors even more thinly and it is set to worsen staff morale and aggravate an already critical staffing crisis among doctors in the NHS.”

Junior doctor in endocrinology and diabetes, Dr Mohammed Abdul-Latif, said: “We have had excellent support from the public on the previous strikes.

“In February, we taught locals how to perform basic CPR.

“None of us want to be on a picket line, but neither are we going to stand for the government undermining our NHS.”

A reporter will be meeting the junior doctors in Walthamstow later today.
