Colleagues of a man who was hit by a train last week have said they are “united in grief” after his “sudden and tragic” death.

The man, named locally as Leyton Sixth Form College teacher Asif Ali, died after being struck by a train at Gants Hill underground station last Thursday (April 21) at 5.27pm.

Staff and students at the college in Essex Road have come together to pay tribute to the 33-year-old business studies teacher, saying he will be remembered with “enormous affection”.

Principal Kevin Watson said: “Since joining the business department in August 2011, Asif established himself as a respected and much-loved teacher and colleague.

“He will be remembered with enormous affection by everyone who knew him and our deepest sympathies are extended to his wife, baby son and all other members of his family.”

The college’s Islamic Society set up a crowdfunding appeal after news of Mr Ali’s death and have already raised £2,070 for his family.

A spokesman for the society said: “Mr Ali was an exemplary teacher who always wanted the best for his students.

“The society send their deepest condolences to Mr Ali’s family at this time of hardship.”

British Transport Police said they are not treating his death as suspicious and an inquest will follow shortly.
