An elderly couple who lost control of their car hit three others before reversing into a building, witnesses have claimed.

The London Ambulance Service was called to a four car crash in George Lane West, South Woodford at 12.15pm today (Tuesday April 26).

Witnesses claim a couple seemingly in their late 70s lost control of their Mazda 2 as they drove down George Lane from High Road, hitting the car in front of them.

After striking two other parked cars further down, the driver reversed, hitting the front of Nautilus International’s office building.

Nautilus International industrial organiser Paul Schroder witnessed the crash from his window.

The 33-year-old said: “I was sitting in the window right at the front of the building, when I looked up to see this car coming really fast straight towards me.

“The elderly man driving the car didn’t look like he was going to be able to stop in time.

“It was pretty scary and a bit of a shock to the system.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed the couple were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Sandra Shillingford, of Southend Road, was in the car in front of the Mazda.

The 55-year-old said: “As I started to slow down for the junction, I felt this huge bang behind me, pushing my car forward.

“Then I saw the driver reverse really fast into the building at the side of the road.”

Artur Meta, 31, and his wife Brikena, 28, were shopping across the road when they returned to find their car had involved in the collision.

Mr Meta, of Navestock Crescent said: “We were pretty shocked to see our car had been in a crash.

“But when we realised it was an elderly couple that had been hurt, we felt lucky to not have been in the car when it happened.”

The couple and Ms Shillingford were taken into Southdene Surgery in George Lane to be checked over.

Met police are investigating and have been contacted for comment.
