In the run up to the EU referendum on June 23, the Guardian is asking people for their views on whether the UK should leave or remain.

Here we speak to prominent brexiter MP and former minister Iain Duncan Smith on why his Chingford and Woodford Green constituents should vote to leave.

“On 23 June, we should take the opportunity to vote to regain control of our borders, regain full control of our domestic security and regain control of our money.

“Critically, if we vote to leave, we will no longer have to send £20 billion to the EU every year. This amounts to £350 million per week sent to the EU, which is the equivalent to building a new hospital every week in the UK. Instead, we could be spending it to improve lives in the Chingford and Woodford Green area with more money for the NHS, schools, roads and railways.

“Staying in the EU would mean uncontrolled migration, which would cost people in terms of jobs, housing, school places and access to the NHS. Only around one in 20 UK businesses trades with Europe, but they are all bound by Brussels rules. Once out, we would be able to have trading arrangements with more countries securing more jobs in the region.

“The reality is that the EU is a political project and this is a once in a generation opportunity for Britain to become independent again. At present more than 60% of our laws are made in Brussels. Leaving the EU, would allow us to claim back our democracy and freedom. This would mean more jobs and prosperity for my constituents in Chingford and Woodford Green.

“Surely keeping our own money, controlling immigration and reducing the costs to businesses in the local area is vital if we are to once again take control of our future.”
