A group of young actors could be in with a chance of performing at the most prestigious theatre in the country.

Next month 31 members of Redbridge Drama Centre in South Woodford will be performing at the Theatre Royal Stratford East as part of the National Theatre’s Connections 500 festival.

The festival brings together 500 youth theatre groups from across the country, giving young people the opportunity to perform to a wider audience and even at The National Theatre in central London.

The Redbridge Youth Theatre Workshop (RYTW) festival contribution is a play called Gargantua by Carl Grose, which tells the story of a couple who give birth to a giant baby after a two and a half year pregnancy.

RYTW director Chris Bocking said: “When we first looked at the script we thought ‘how an earth will we do that!’

“Giant babies, helicopters, tanks and mass destruction were just a few of the challenges the script threw our way, but our talented group of young people have gone all out and produced a piece we are very proud of.

“This project has been an excellent opportunity for our performers to create something for a wider audience, and possibly perform it at the world famous National Theatre.”

After a string of successful performances at the theatre in Churchfields, South Woodford last month, RYTW will be taking to the stage in Stratford on May 13, where they could be selected to go on to the National Theatre later this year.
