People in Redbridge head to the polls tomorrow (Thursday May 5) to elect their representative for the London Assembly.

After Conservative Roger Evans' retirement, who will be the next London Assembly member for Havering and Redbridge?

For those who are undecided, the candidates have given us five reasons you should vote for them.

Ivana Bartoletti (Labour)

  • I have an outstanding knowledge of the local issues  (having campaigned with Wes Streeting MP, Mike Gapes, Cllr Jas Athwal and the local party in Havering for years); that, combined with my experience, means I am safe pair of hands for our local residents.
    • Keeping Havering and Redbridge safe: our residents fear the rise of burglary and anti-social behaviour as a result of massive cuts to the Metropolitan police. Under the previous Tory Mayor we lost both our police stations in the West of Redbridge, as well as the nearby Leytonstone station. I will work with the Mayor to make our area safer, take on knife crime and ensure we keep officers in the heart of our local communities.
    • We need homes to be genuinely affordable, so our children and grandchildren won't be forced to move out of London just so they can buy a house. I will work with the Mayor to ensure people in Havering and Redbridge are not left behind. And I will work with our councils to tackle rises in rogue landlords and unlicensed houses in multiple occupancy.
    • Good value public transport: we need to freeze fares and improve the infrastructure of the central line in Redbridge and the district line in Havering. The cost of commuting from Havering and Redbridge has gone through the roof under the Tories and I will work with the Mayor so our residents get a better deal.
    • Fighting for our NHS: I will use my experience in the NHS to help the campaign to save the A&E at King George Hospital – after the problems at Whipps Cross and the disgraceful closure of Heronwood and Galleon’s wards in Wanstead, I will be a champion for healthcare services in our area.

Keith Prince (Conservative)

I am the only candidate with local knowledge and the experience to do the job, and I will:

  • Work with Zac Goldsmith to solve the housing crisis.
  • Crack down on crime and anti-social behaviour.
  • Protect our green spaces, including Oakfield, from development.
  • Deliver transport projects for hardworking commuters, including improvements to Redbridge roundabout.
  • Be the only candidate able to work with this government to deliver for Redbridge.

Ian Sanderson (Liberal Democrat)

  • We would introduce half price early bird fares,  which will help those who travel early to work, who are often the less well off. They would also encourage some people to adjust their working hours, reducing the congestion on London commuter routes, such as the Central Line.
  • We would restore Safer Neighbourhood Teams, which have an important role in crime fighting and getting the police and public talking to each other. We see 3000 extra police in London as vital.
  • Housing in Redbridge is typical of the crisis all over London, which means homes are priced beyond the reach of many. We would build 200,000 new homes before 2020, including some as council houses. This needs action by the Mayor, including identifying unused brown field land and setting up an academy to train more people for building trades.
  • Mothers of young children in London are less likely to return to work that in other parts of England. This highlights the need for affordable childcare. Especially in Outer London boroughs such as Redbridge, this must start earlier and finish later, allowing the extra time that working Londoners need for commuting.
  • I would like different communities and groups in Redbridge to recognise the important but different contributions that they all make and to get to know each better, leading to a greater involvement of citizens in the community. We should also seek closer relations with our European partners, thus supporting London’s position as the greatest European city.

Lee Burkwood (Green Party)

  • I will fight for affordable housing in Redbridge, using small developers, housing associations and councils to build on public-owned brownfield sites.
  • I will take action on illegal levels of air pollution in Redbridge, in areas around the North Circular in Wanstead and Charlie Brown’s Roundabout in South Woodford, by introducing a smarter congestion charge and implementing more cycle lanes across the borough.
  • I will try my utmost to get a renters’ union set up in City Hall, where residents can hold rogue landlords in Redbridge to account and take on rent control.
  • If elected, I and other Green Party representatives in City Hall will flatten tube fares, to get cheaper travel for residents in Redbridge and the rest of outer London beyond zone 3.
  • I will fight to protect our green belt and stop council’s building on valued green sites like Oakfields Playing Field in Ilford.
