A man was shot dead in Leyton yesterday morning.

Police launched a murder investigation after they were called at 3.17am to the junction of Melbourne Road and Capworth Street.

There had been reports of shots being heard and a collision.

Police found a man in his 20s with gunshot wounds.

The London Ambulance Service was called but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene a short while later.

Police said next of kin have been informed but had no formal identification had yet been made.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place later today, Sunday, May 15, at Walthamstow Public Mortuary.

Detectives from the homicide and major crime command are investigating, led by Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Packer.

DCI Packer said: "The motive for the shooting is unclear at this stage.

"I need to hear from witnesses who saw anything suspicious in Leyton early on Saturday morning, and from anyone who has information that may help the murder investigation."
