Whipps Cross Hospital is introducing a new scheme to help patients with dementia record their preferences, in a bid to improve their hospital experience.

The Leytonstone hospital will use “forget me not” cards, on which patients will be able to make note of information such as favourite foods, activities they enjoy and their preferred bedtime.

The scheme is designed to help of patients who are unable to speak or communicate clearly, with the aim of respecting their wishes.

Hospital managing director, Fiona Smith, said: “According to the Alzheimer’s Society, 92 per cent of people believe hospitals can be a frightening place for those living with dementia.

“As the number of people diagnosed with dementia continues to increase, it’s crucial that we respond by meeting their needs.”

The scheme has been introduced as part of National Dementia Awareness Week, which runs from May 15 to 21.

The hospital is also hosting events and information stalls to encourage public awareness of dementia and promote the wide range of support available.
