Waltham Forest council’s deputy leader has called an inquiry to reject Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) that would pave the way for expansion of London City Airport.

Cllr Clyde Loakes has warned plans to for the airport to acquire 12,000 square metres of nearby land to boost its capacity by 50 per cent, would bring “more daily misery” to the borough’s residents.

If the CPOs are granted, around 110,000 flights per year would operate from city airport.

Cllr Loakes said: “Our residents’ quality of life is already under huge pressure from the impact of aircraft noise.

“Our location in north east London means that we are buffered by Heathrow Gatwick, Stansted and London City Airports.

“The borough has now become the third most overflown borough in London after Hounslow and Richmond, by stealth with little consultation and engagement with its residents.”

Former Mayor of London Boris Johnson threw out the City Airport’s expansion in March 2015.

However, the airport has now appealed to the communities and local government secretary, Greg Clark, in an effort to overturn the decision, which will now be decided by an inquiry.

Last year, a council survey revealed 81 per cent of Waltham Forest residents felt they were disturbed by current aircraft noise and 73 per cent said it affected their sleep.

Cllr Loakes added: “We do not believe that London City Airport have been good neighbours to the residents of Waltham Forest, and we were extremely disappointed that they chose to appeal the decision on airport expansion.

“They have also not kept local communities properly informed about the CPO process, having not included the need for CPOs in their original planning application.

“I urged the inquiry to reject the CPOs requested by the airport because if the development itself is unacceptable the transfer of land and water belonging to all Londoners needed for the development should also be refused.”
