A sports club is tackling London’s childhood obesity problems head on with toddler fitness classes.

Athlete Fit in Woodford Green is getting children from as young as two-years-old running, jumping and throwing during its fitness sessions.

Statistics from the Labour party in March revealed nearly one in four 10 and 11-year-olds in London are clinically obese.

The new figures found a total of 23.4 per cent of children aged between 10 and 11 in Waltham Forest are now obese.

While the Mayor of London said a “national sugar tax” could help solve the “obesity crisis” Athlete Fit founder Jane Farrier is encouraging activity at an earlier age.

Mrs Farrier is running Athletots sessions for pre-schoolers aged two and up and will be beginning a new after-school Athlekids class for Year 1 and 2 children from September.

She added: I've been a children’s fitness coach for more than 10 years and I recognised the need to get youngsters engaged at an early age in order to encourage a healthy active lifestyle.

"My new concept gets children involved in a fun environment using bright colourful equipment and teaches them to progress from basic to complex movements which will benefit them in all athletic activity. "

Athletots is a five week course running every Friday from June 10 to July 8 in All Saints’ Woodford Wells in Inmans Row, Woodford Green.

The whole course is priced at £30 which runs for 45 minutes twice a day at 10.30am and 1.30pm.
